We reached out to five tastemakers to find out what thoughtful gifts they like to give and also receive. These suggestions aren’t just for Valentine’s Day — they make great presents year-round (this article makes a great bookmark, hint hint). What makes a good Valentine’s Day gift?
I’ve always thought Valentine’s Day gifts are more about their sentimental value than material value. A good Valentine’s Day gift has effort put into it and should be something that will have a lot of meaning to your partner. For example, earrings with your partner’s birthstone, personalized gifts, a bouquet of your partner’s favorite flowers, or handmade cards with love notes in them are also great.

What’s a good way to figure out in advance what someone wants?
I’m a huge snooper so I’ll look at my partner’s shopping tabs on his computer to see what products he’s been viewing. I’ll also show him pictures of different things and just straight up ask if he likes it or not. Another good way is to see what brands they’re following on social media.

What are some good Valentine’s Day gifts to get for men?
Something sentimental and sweet always works. I feel like men tend to not be into Valentine’s Day as much as women, so I always go for gifts with meaning. One year I wrote my partner different letters with “open when….” on the front with different occasions like “open when you’re sad” or “open when you want to laugh”. He loved it!

What are some good Valentine’s Day gifts to get for women?
Jewelry; something chic and simple that can go with anything. I like Oma the Label, Mejuri, Missoma and Tiffany & Co. No rings! Unless it’s a proposal, but most women I know do not want to be proposed to on Valentine’s Day anyway.

What would you like to get for yourself for Valentine’s Day? Why?
Since Valentine’s Day is about love, I show myself love through self-care. The perfect valentine’s day gifts for myself would be to:
1. Schedule a cleaning service for my house.

What makes a good Valentine’s Day gift?
Thoughtfulness; it doesn’t matter what the gift is, as long as it’s appropriate for the person who is receiving it, it can be very special.

What’s a good way to figure out in advance what someone wants?
I always say it’s best to be upfront, you can just ask. If you really want to be stealth, you can ask a close friend of theirs.

What are some good gifts to get for men?
Sports clothing, I usually go with lululemon, James Perse, and Nike since those are my husband’s favorites. Also, tickets to a sporting event you know he will enjoy, or just a nice steak dinner.

What are some good gifts to get for women?
You cannot go wrong with jewelry (or at least it would be very difficult to!) For jewelry, I like Cartier, Tiffany & Co., and most of my custom pieces are from COLY Jewelry.

What would you like to get for yourself for Valentine’s Day? Why?
I’m at a point in my life where I feel so blessed to have all the material possessions I could want; what I want for Valentine’s Day I just to spend time with my family and relax and recharge.

What makes a good Valentine’s Day gift?
I think any gift that has a lot of thought behind is a good gift, regardless of price. If you know someone likes something, they’re a Harry Potter Fan, love plants, coffee lover — anything that shows that you know them and you pay attention to things they love.

What’s a good way to figure out in advance what someone wants?
I feel like these things come naturally the longer you get to know someone. They’ll mention they’re a big coffee drinker or get excited about new plants they got, or in my case, I’ll mention a new bag or talk about my TikTok, etc. Pay attention to things they talk about or get excited talking about and that’s a good place to start. If you ever have doubts about something, you can always ask their opinion. For example, I wanted to get my best friend a lululemon belt bag, but I was unsure about the Sherpa version or the regular one so I asked her “Do we like the sherpa or the regular one more?” Granted I ask for her opinion for a lot of fashion-related things so it wasn’t too out of the blue where she was suspicious but that’s always a great option too!

What are some good gifts to get for men?
I always think of it as three categories for gifts for men, luxury, tech, or experiences. Some of these may be a bit generic but do make for very great gifts. For luxury, any kind of luxury cologne/fragrance, small leather goods (wallet, cardholder, etc), shoes, or even clothing if they are into a specific brand. For Tech, this is definitely easier if you know they’re into gaming/tech. You can never go wrong with computer parts and/or anything to improve their gaming setup, for example, a new chair, lights, or desk. If their phone is on its last leg, consider getting them the newest iPhone. You can also do a gaming console like the Switch or new games you can play together. For experiences, this is great if you’re looking to spend some more time together. You can get them tickets to see their favorite sports team, see a band you both like, a weekend getaway, wine tasting, or sunset cruise.

What are some good gifts to get for women?
My boyfriend may disagree but I think women are the easiest to shop for. More often than not, if you’re paying attention they’ve been dropping hints. “I really like these shoes” “I think this bag is so cute” etc. The easiest gifts in my opinion are jewelry, handbags, fragrances, and candles. Similarly, with the gifts for men, you can also “give” them an experience. One of the best gifts I’ve gotten from my boyfriend is vacations we got to go on together.

What would you like to get for yourself for Valentine’s Day? Why?
I know this may sound boring but there isn’t too much I’m looking to get for myself specifically for Valentine’s Day. Although I love myself, I end up treating myself every day like it’s Valentine’s Day so nothing too special. I have been eyeing a new bag, maybe something pink which is fitting for Valentine’s Day or maybe a new laptop. The past few months, I’ve been very content with what I’ve gotten recently and I don’t really have the itch to buy anything too extravagant and I feel truly so blessed.

What makes a good Valentine’s Day gift?
I love thoughtful Valentine’s Day gifts. Now, this doesn’t have to be anything crazy, but I think checking in with what your loved one needs, in this current moment, that is in tune with their love language is a really cool way to approach this.

For example, I’ve been really stressed lately so I would so appreciate it my date took me out on a spa day to places like Sojo Spa or Ling’s Beauty Spa. It would mean so much, and I would find more use and meaning out of that than a diamond necklace in this current moment if that makes sense!

What’s a good way to figure out in advance what someone wants?
Just ask if you’re unsure! I’ve been with my partner for ten years and it’s so much less tiring just straight up asking each other “hey, do you have anything specific you need or want that would bring you joy and comfort?” No guessing games, no disappointments. Communication is key.

If you want to surprise them, get someone else to ask instead of you.

What are some good gifts to get for men?
Every individual is different. What do they love? What brings them joy? What do they get excited about? My boyfriend loves gaming and sake. I got him the newest Nintendo Switch game that was just released and a sake subscription, Tippsy Sake.

A nice belt from a designer brand (a designer belt I have and love is from Hermès) is also always very classy and practical.

What are some good gifts to get for women?
You can’t go wrong with flowers. I think a misconception is that gifts have to be fancy — that’s not the case for everyone. I personally love a home-cooked meal with a special printed menu, a massage, facial, anything to do with self-care and pampering. If your loved one is into designer, bags, and makeup are always a good option too! Gift cards to their favorite brand(s) if your loved one is indecisive [laughs]!

What would you like to get for yourself for Valentine’s Day? Why?
I would just have a Me day. Take myself out on a walk, buy myself flowers, get pampered, nourish my body with good food and drinks that I love, and spend time with people who make me smile. While I want to buy myself cool things, I think your relationship with yourself is the most important. Becoming the best, kindest, and most grounded version of myself is one of the most meaningful thing I can gift myself.

What makes a good Valentine’s Day gift?
I believe all gifts should be thoughtful. The same old boring flowers, candy, and teddy bears are so 2001. A good Valentine’s Day gift should be based on what you know the person will love.

What’s a good way to figure out in advance what someone wants?
I tend to pay attention to what people show interest in whether it be what they wear frequently (colors, accessories, brands, etc.) or what they speak about. In normal conversation, people tend to bring up what they have their eyes on or what’s on their wishlist. You can also learn about their hobbies too. What someone enjoys in their spare time is a good opening to what types of gifts you should buy them. Ex: I love to travel so a friend bought me a high-end passport cover.

What are some good gifts to get for men?
Some people say men are difficult to shop for but I disagree. They are pretty simple when it comes to gifts if you pay attention. A good gift for a man could be anything from a box of cigars, a Scotch Porter beard care kit, desk accessories from Pottery Barn are always a great touch. Additionally, Scully & Scully has some high-end sets for desks. Some great cologne options are Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille, Chanel Bleu or Maison Margiela Republica. Lastly, I would recommend a cozy sweater. These could range from Banana Republic to Ralph Lauren or Saint Laurent.

What are some good gifts to get for women?
I don’t know a woman who doesn’t enjoy a good perfume. And because there are so many at different sizes and price points, it’s really a gift that you can never go wrong with. My favorite scent right now is YSL Libre (it comes in a very nice bottle with a gold logo that I also love) followed by Miss Dior Absolutely Blooming. If we’re talking value, Sephora has a nice Hermes perfume set where you get 4 bottles for $60. Can’t beat that! A few other things most women will enjoy are a good lipstick (YSL, Huda beauty), a Yankee Candle or luxe pajama set from Neiman Marcus.

What would you like to get for yourself for Valentine’s Day? Why?
These days I’m slowly moving away from bags and shoes because they are starting to feel repetitive. I find myself more into jewelry and have been eyeing a bracelet from the Tiffany T collection. I think jewelry is timeless and it’s something I can wear five to ten years from now as opposed to a bag that may be deemed “out of style”.
