NYC beauty Tyla-Lauren Gilmore is the queen of amazing yet attainable hair and makeup which has garnered her over 100,000 followers on Instagram and YouTube. Yes, she can rock a luxe bold lip or teach you how to do a cool faux-bob with her bouncy curls, but unlike with other social media stars the products she uses won’t break the bank and can frequently be found at drugstores. We wanted to find out more about the wallet-friendly beauty items she loves and spent an afternoon with her discussing her faves.
1. Cantu Shea Butter Leave-In Conditioning Repair Cream
This is my favorite natural hair product, in fact, I went natural with it. When I was in college like most students I was poor and didn’t know which direction I wanted to go in with my hair. I had a friend who knew a lot about hair and she told me “this is affordable and will work for you.” My hair needs a heavy moisturizing cream texture and this is only $5. It’s really helped me go natural. I use this product all the time and no matter how many luxury products I have, I always go back to this one.
2. Philosophy Amazing Grace
This is my favorite fragrance. In college one of my roommates had gotten this as a present from her grandma. She sprayed it on and said “ugh I hate this fragrance” and I was like “wait, I am obsessed with it!” I used to wear JLo Glow when I was younger but then I wanted to wear a woman’s scent. Ever since then I’ve worn this.
3. Vaseline
People think I’m crazy and old-school for this but I use Vaseline for my eyebrows, eyelashes, to take off makeup, and on my elbows and ankles. If I have Vaseline with me I’ll be fine [laughs]. My face will be moisturized and Vaseline is also always number one for my lips no matter what I try.
4. Garnier Fructis 1 Minute Hair Mask
I love hair masks and this one is super quick and convenient, as well as multi-use. When these masks first came out they were cute and mini-size but I would use all of it in one use. Now they launched huge ones and I use it as a styler and a mask. This mask super affordable, you can get it at CVS or Walgreens which I love.
5. MAC Lipstick Matte in Taupe
I wear this every single day it’s the perfect nude for every skin tone. Sometimes I use it with a gloss, sometimes with a liner, but by itself it’s just a really neutral lipstick for a really easy beauty look. It’s really versatile.
6. Derma E Microdermabrasion Scrub
I get a lot of texture on my complexion because I have oily skin. I’ve been using this scrub for the past five months and I can see such a difference in my skin. It’s hard to find the right microdermabrasion mask because some can open up your pores too much. This one doesn’t.
7. Philip Kingsley Elasticizer Extreme
When I found this pre-shampoo treatment my life really changed! I only wash my hair once a week because if I don’t my hair will fall out. I use this before I shampoo; it’s my first step, I dampen my hair, then I put the elasticizer on and then I put on a shower cap for 15 minutes. Next, I shampoo and condition as normal. It helps with frizz, length, and it combats shrinkage. They have ones for coarse and dry hair. I love that you instantly see results. They also have different scents — the coconut one smells like a vacation.
8. Maybelline BB Cream
Another super affordable product that you can get anywhere. I love it for summer because I hate wearing foundation when it’s hot out. When I leave my house and I’m commuting for an hour my face will melt off, no matter how much primer I use. It has enough coverage but also a nice dewy look so you don’t need to pack it on. It’s also great to wear to the beach when you don’t want to wear nothing at all – this has SPF.
