Photo by Riccardo Maria Mantero Located just two hours north of Cancun, Isla Holbox is a world away from hotel chains, noisy traffic and spring breakers. This tranquil island is famous for its beautiful beaches and abundant wildlife — think flamingos, whale sharks, turtles and more. Holbox (pronounced ol-bosh) is also a highly photogenic destination, so if you want to take some nice pics to remember your trip (and maybe make your friends jealous) make sure to bring a camera or keep your phone charged. These are the best Instagram locations Holbox has to offer — you’ll love the pics you take here. 1. Swings The entire island is dotted with swings perfect for chilling in the ocean and also the ideal backdrop for your Holbox photo. Listen a swing pic isn’t exactly groundbreaking, but it’s a popular motif for a reason. I know I couldn’t resist as you can see below, this picture was taken in front of Zomay.
2. Flamingos Head to the island’s northeastern point Punta Mosquito for potential flamingo spotting. You can come here by boat or walk when the tide is low. If you see flamingos head towards them quietly and calmly and you might get a picture like the one below.
3. Hammocks Like swings, hammocks are everywhere practically asking you to lay in the ocean and unlock ultimate levels of chill.
4. Palapas I’m probably biased because I stayed at HM Palapas del Mar but these thatched roof small houses are perfect for island living and make for a cute vacation backdrop. Other palapas-style hotel options include Hotel La Palapa Holbox and Palapas del Sol.
5. Murals Walking through Holbox you’ll see lots of colorful street art, there are even some murals on the beach like this one depicting a fisherman.

6. Sunset I don’t use this word often but sunsets in Holbox are epic. Because the coastline is very flat and the water shallow and calm, you can actually see the sun slowly become submerged into the sea and into darkness. There’s an array of colors and it feels like everyone on the island comes out to see this beautiful natural spectacle.

7. Salma Holbox Once it gets dark this sexy beach bar beckons with its red signage and lighting. Inside you’ll find swings and bespoke cocktails. Try their mezcal on the rocks with a splash of passion fruit juice, the perfect blend of smoky and sour.

8. Lobster Pizza If there’s one dish Holbox is famous for it’s their lobster pizza. You honestly can’t visit the island without eating one of these and snapping a pic. We loved the lobster pizza at Roots and the garden setting is also lovely.
9. Whale Sharks Holbox is one of the best places to swim with whale sharks, the gentle giants of the sea. From June through November these animals (the world’s largest fish) come to eat in the plankton-rich waters and you can snorkel with them from a distance.
10. The Holbox Sign Snap a pic of this sign found near the main plaza of Holbox to remind you of your time on the island when you’re back in reality. You get to be part of the sign as a stand-in for the L of Holbox.
